The underwater archeologics of the Assembly of Andalusia have eight documented sites
In the Andalusian waters there have been counted 81 archeologic sites, with a cronology starting with the Early History until the Modern and Contemporanean History, and are distributed geographically as follows:
According to oral sources, possibly there are 168 more sites existing, but still subject to an archeological confirmation or documentation. Amongst the documented sites there have to be mentioned the shipwreck Gandolfo in Almería, with rests of a Roman ship, or Los Navíos-La Piedra in Cádiz, a Modern History site, counting 61 iron canons and four anchors.
As a result of the works the CAS counts with necessary information to establish a mechanism of protection and conservation and to design strategies of investigation. With respect to the first objective, there is already involved the cultural ministry for the inscription into the General Catalogue of the Historical Heritage in 53 arqueologic zones situated in waters of Andalucía, as well as in the declaration of other 32 zones of archeologic servitude.
The proliferation of the infrastructure workings that are affecting the sea ambience, the natural gas lines, commercial ports or maritime wind parks, incrementing with the touristic pressure that brings the construction of new sports harbours and the regeneration of the beaches, as well as the generalization of the diving sport has provoqued an increasing plundering over the sites.
If they are not establishing mechanism of control for this situation it will lead to a gradual loss of the water archeologic heritage. The foreseen declaration of the archeologic zones will suppose the application of a protective norm that establish, amongst other forms, that every working or removal of the terrain that is projected in the area declared as “good cultural interest”, will have to be authorized by the Administration. Before they give their approval, they can arrange the realization of the prospects and the archeological excavation.
